Israel/Terrorism: Hamas claims responsibility for a second attack in the West Bank

Media reported on Thursday that Hamas armed wing Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades had claimed responsibility for a drive-shooting that left two people injured in the Jewish settlement Kochav Hashachar east of Ramallah on Wednesday.

Moreover, the spokesman of the group, Abu Ubaida, had also vowed that further attacks would be carried in order to disrupt the peace talks that are scheduled to resume between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

As a reminder, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are to resume direct peace talks 20 months after negotiations had been halted at the end of 2008 during a trilateral meeting hosted by President Barack Obama’s administration in Washington on Thursday.

Israel/Lebanon/Security: Five killed in Lebanese-Israeli border clash

Media reported that three Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and one Israeli officer have been killed during clashes between Israeli and Lebanese troops along the border on Tuesday.

According to a Lebanese army officer, the clash started when Israeli troops tried to remove a tree from the Lebanese side of the border.

The Israeli Military Spokesman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich stated that a senior officer was killed during the clashes and identified him as a 45-year-old battalion commander with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Moreover, Israel Defence Forces GOC Northern Command Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot said two Israeli officers had been very seriously hit during the exchange of fire.

Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman denounced the fighting and urged the army commander to confront any Israeli aggression whatever the sacrifices.

Egypt/Security: 26 arrested on planning terror plot against Jewish pilgrims

Egypt's state news agency MENA reported on Sunday that security forces arrested 26 suspects, allegedly belonging to a cell of terrorist group Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), who were plotting "terrorist acts" against Jewish pilgrims.

The news agency said the suspects have been arrested in the provinces of Mansoura and Dakahiliya in the Nile Delta and troops recovered a cache of arms, explosives, rudimentary rockets and ammunition from them.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an Egyptian official said the suspects confessed of having plotted to bomb the tomb of the 19th century Jewish Rabbi Abuhatzeira, to which hundreds of Israeli pilgrims come every year in January.

On October 6,1981, EIJ carried out the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. Since then the terrorist group has been absorbed by Al-Qaeda, with former EIJ leader Ayman al-Zawahri now as deputy to Osama bin Laden.

Israel/Jordan/Terrorism: Bomb targets Israeli diplomats

Israeli media reported that a bomb went off near a convoy of Israeli diplomats in Jordan on Thursday, causing no casualties. Army Radio said that the explosion occured at around 5 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) close to the Allenby Bridge border crossing.

According to Israel's Channel Two television, the 2 cars had been en route from the Israeli embassy in Amman. It added that the ambassador, Danny Nevo, was not in the car during the time of the explosion. Neither Israeli nor Jordan authorities made any further on the incident. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Israel/Defence: Jerusalem test fires Arrow missile defense system

The Defence Ministry of Israel announced on Tuesday that it carried out a test launch of its Arrow II interceptor missile, a system designed to defend against possible ballistic missile attacks by Iran and Syria "It was a successful test," the ministry said. Speaking on condition of anonymity a defence official said the Arrow intercepted a target missile, simulating an Iranian Shehab, launched from an Israeli aircraft over the Mediterranean. "The arrow's interception altitude has been enhanced. Of course, the higher you go, the further out you can reach as well. Our doctrine is to intercept enemy missiles as far away from Israeli skies as possible. That gives you time for another try if you miss," the official said, adding that the aim of the test was to prepare for future threats as enemy missiles improve their capabilities.

Reportedly, it was the 16th test launch of an Arrow. The project is jointly funded by Israel and the United States to serve as a strategtic shield against ballistic missiles in the arsenals of Iran and Syria.

India/Israel/Defence: New Delhi-Jerusalem sign USD 1.4 billion deal on air defence system

India has signed a 1.4 billion (Rs 7,042) air defence deal with Israel for the purchase and joint development of an air defence system. The defence deal between the two countries was inked on February 27 under which Israel will develop and manufacture seaborne and shore-based systems against missile attack on India, the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) officially acknowledged.

However, Indian Defence Ministry is yet to confirm the deal officially. New Delhi has achieved success in developing a powerful missile in the same class. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has recently been successful in test firing Advance Air Defence (AAD) missile. India is currently Israel’s largest arms buyer.
 
Both the countries has also discussed the mode of payments. It has been agreed that part of the payment for the systems will be made during the development period and the balance will be paid during the 66-month delivery period, which is slated to begin 90 months from the date the advance payment is received.

Israel/Terrorism: IDF seize 3 pipe bomb attackers

Forces from the Givati brigade of the Israel Defense Force (IDF) on Wednesday seized three Palestinian bombers in the Beit Dajan village, southeast of Nablus. The militants were arrested in possession of a pipe bomb, improvised weapons and a detailed map of the area, which indicates they were planning a terror attack. They are currently being held for questioning.

It has been reported that the infantry brigades actually arrived after reports of a Molotov cocktail attack on an Israeli vehicle that was driving towards the Elon Moreh settlement. No damage or injuries were reported.

Earlier in February, Givati forces caught two terrorists carrying improvised weapons and Molotov cocktails in the same area. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Palestinian militants fired a rocket at the southern Israel city of Ashkelon, but caused no casualties or destruction.

High alert after massive bomb attack foiled in Haifa  

Police declared on Sunday a high alert across Israel after sappers neutralized a bomb in a car outside Haifa's Lev Hamifratz shopping mall Saturday night.  

After being alerted by an employee of the shopping center, who reported hearing a light explosion, police found a partially exploded bomb in the trunk of a Sabaru which was parked outside of the shopping center. They found also several more unexploded bombs in the vehicule.

The car belonged to an Arab woman from East Jerusalem but the commander of the police’s Northern Districk, Shimon Koren, told Army Radio that the vehicule had been stolen. 

“This was a terrorist attack in every sense”, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday at the beginning of the weekly cabinet meeting.  

An Israeli Arab organization calling itself the Galilee Freedom Fighters claimed responsibility for the attempted attack. In a message, the group said that the attack was meant as a response to the destruction of homes in East Jerusalem and the Israeli “massacre” in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. 
 Security forces doubted the claim, saying they were unfamiliar with a group of that name currently operating in Israel. Police Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the authorities were still investigating the incident, but they believe Palestinian militants were behind the attempted bombing.

Lebanon/Terrorism: Nasrallah said Hezbollah will never recognize Israel

In a speech beamed via video to thousands of Hezbollah followers in Lebanon, on the occasion of the prophet’s birthday on Friday, the leader of Lebanon's Islamist Hezbollah movement said his organization will never officially accept Israel which is “a rapacious, racist, and illegal entity”. “We are strong and we are capable,” Nasrallah said. “If we will stand on our feet, we can destroy this entity.”

Hassan Nasrallah was responding to a US suggestion that both Hezbollah and the Palestinian faction Hamas should recognise Israel before expecting any US engagement.

Opération « Plomb durci » à Gaza : analyse et perspectives

Le début de cette année 2009 a été marqué par une nouvelle secousse tellurique aux relents de soufre dans ce Moyen-Orient dont la violence n’en finit pas d’ébranler notre imaginaire, bercé par l’idéal post-historique de paix perpétuelle. Les Israéliens – préoccupés par la situation sécuritaire – se sont désintéressés de ces élections dont ils auraient certainement préféré qu’elles n’aient pas lieu. Au terme d’une campagne terne et dominée, ces dernières semaines, par la guerre avec le Hamas à Gaza, c’est finalement Kadima, le parti centriste, qui remporte – provisoirement – le scrutin, avec un siège d’avance sur le Likoud. Mais si Tzipi Livni devrait logiquement être chargée par Shimon Peres de la formation du gouvernement, c’est Benjamin Netanyahu, pourtant battu, qui est le mieux placé pour former une coalition gouvernementale de droite, principalement avec le parti nationaliste Ysrael Beitenou d’Avigdor Liberman… Lire la suite

Israel/Defence: IDF raid follows mortar attack

Responding to the mortars Gaza militants fired on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Force (IDF) carried out air strike on a Hamas post in Khan Younis, a town in southern Gaza Strip, before dawn on Thursday. "As the sole authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas bears full responsibility for all terror activities originating within its area of control," said the IDF, noting that no one was reported injured in the attack. The Gaza militants fired two mortar shells at the western Negev on Wednesday, a day after Israel’s general elections.

In a separate incident on Tuesday evening, a Qassam rocket hit the western Negev city of Sderot. Also Tuesday night, unknown gunmen fired shots on a car with Israeli license plates near Beit El. There were no reports of injuries in the incident. At least 40 Qassam rockets, mortar shells, and Grad missiles have been fired at Israel since the cease-fire, said the IDF.

Les Médias et la « rue arabe » face à la crise de Gaza

Comment les médias arabes traitent-ils de la crise à Gaza ? Comment la « rue arabe » fait-elle écho à ses intellectuels ? L’ESISC disposant d’un service spécialisé dans le suivi, la traduction et l’analyse des journaux et sites Internet arabophones, il nous a semblé particulièrement intéressant de nous pencher sur cette question. On découvrira dans les pages qui suivent à quel point cette presse manque, le plus souvent, du plus simple recul et d’une approche analytique objective, confondant de plus l’exposé des faits et leur commentaire. Et à quel point elle se fait, depuis plusieurs semaines, le vecteur d’un discours de haine non seulement contre Israël, mais aussi contre ses propres dirigeants, contre « l’Occident » - et surtout les Etats-Unis et la France – et même contre certaines minorités du « monde arabe », par exemple les Amazighs et les Kabyles ou les Chrétiens suspectés de ne pas être assez « solidaires » avec la population de Gaza… Lire la suite

« Jour de la colère » et risque élevé d’attentats ou d’incidents antisémites ce vendredi

Le prédicateur renommé Youssef al-Qaradaoui, par ailleurs haut responsable des Frères Musulmans ainsi que les Frères musulmans eux-mêmes ont appelé à faire de ce vendredi une « journée de la colère » et ont souhaité que la prière traditionnelle du vendredi, moment le plus important de la semaine d’un musulman pieux, soit suivie de « grandes manifestations » de solidarité partout dans le monde musulman.

Les « journées de la colère » décrétés dans le passé – entre autres dans le cadre de la crise des caricatures de Mahomet en 2006 – ont habituellement donné lieu à de très importants rassemblements et à des troubles graves.

Partout dans le monde, y compris en Europe, les communautés juives seront donc l’objet d’une menace spécifique ce vendredi, en particulier à partir du début de l’après-midi. On notera que plusieurs fatwa appelant à « tuer les juifs » ont été diffusées par des médias arabes en ligne et des sites internet djihadistes ces detrniers jours, la dernière émanant de l’Imam algérien Chamseddine Bourouba. Qui écrivait hier « Tout Juif est une cible légitime que les musulmans peuvent abattre ».

Les intérêts des pays occidentaux accusés de « soutenir Israël » pourraient également être visés dans le monde arabe.

 Ayman al-Zawahiri appelle à attaquer les intérêts occidentaux « partout dans le monde »

Dans un nouveau message posté mardi soir sur plusieurs sites islamistes arabes surveillés par l’ESISC, al-Qaïda appelle à attaquer les intérêts occidentaux pour venger les martyrs de Gaza. Le message de 10 minutes a été réalisée par as-Sahab, la « Maison de production » d’al-QaIda.

 Dans ce message – intitulé « La boucherie de Gaza et le blocus des traîtres », le numéro 2 et principal idéologue d'Al-Qaïda, Ayman al-Zawahiri appelle à « attaquer les intérêts israéliens et occidentaux » notamment en Afrique du nord, au Proche Orient, au Yémen et « partout dans le monde » en réaction à l'offensive lancée par l’armée israélienne à Gaza.  

 « L'opération de l’armée israélienne à Gaza s’inscrit dans le cadre des croisades de l'Occident contre l'islam », affirme le chef terroriste. 

Il critique par ailleurs le silence du président américain élu Barack Obama qu’il accusé d’être un « complice d’Israël ». Il qualifie également de « traître » et de « criminel » le président égyptien Hosni Moubarak pour avoir fermé les frontières de son pays devant les Palestiniens.

Israel/Defense : intense diplomatic ballet

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed Foreign minsiters from the key powers that arrived in New York for a 48 hours of intense diplomacy to impose a truce in the Gaza Strip. He said during his speech: "I have called for an immediate end to the violence, and I have warned that if these appeals went unheeded, civilians were going to continue to be killed in large numbers." The UN meeting comes after French president Nicolas Sarkosy and his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Moubarrak proposed a plan imposing an immediate ceasfire to allow more aid into the Gaza strip. No further details were given about that plan but it could focus on measures to prevent weapons smuggling from Egypt to Gaza. In a gesture of goodwill, Israel has announced it will stop its attack for three hours a day to allow the organisation of a safe corridor between 11h00 and 14h00 GMT.

Israeli ground forces battled with Hamas gunmen on Wednesday morning in the Zeitoun neighborhood east of Gaza City. Two soldiers were also lightly wounded while the army was looking for rocket launching sites and bunkers used by Gaza militants. On the ground, Tsahal has also left Khan Younes, south of Gaza strip, where the Hamas is very strong.

Hamas executes also 6 men, in the past two days, for supplying information to the IDF, said security officers. Among the alleged collaborators, executed on the street, were three brothers, said Palestinians organization members and security sources. A Hamas source reported that "an assassination or an air strike cannot take place without guidance from the ground, and all these guys confessed to the act."
